Design Discourse 1

European Animation

Our lecturer for Design Discourse 1 Yuanyuan began to relay to us important pioneers of modernist european animation as well as the definition of modern art and how we perceive it. These abstract animators who created modern art through animated movement included Walter Ruttmann (1887-1941), Viking Eggeling (1880-1925), Hans Richter (1888-1976), Oskar Fischinger (1900-1967) and Len Lye (1901-1980.)

The one pioneer who stood out the most for me during the presentation was German animator Oskar Fischinger mainly for his use of colour and shape incorporated to emphasise movement and rhythm. During this lesson we were shown one of his most famous animations ‘Komposition in Blau’ that explored movement through a vibrant colour scheme. His work was so impressively influential that he even worked on a project with Disney known as ‘Fantasia’ to which we can see a lot of resemblance between that and ‘Komposition in Blau.’
